Does any program have a shot at taking the Brands bros. down? Ever?
On Sunday, Iowa once again proved why they are the most dominant force in NCAA wrestling. No. 2 Hawkeyes took down No.5 Minnesota with a 19-12 W and its fourth straight Big Ten reg. season title. In 77 consecutive duals, the Hawks are UNBEATEN. At 125, Iowa Sophomore Matt McDonough destroyed the Gophers’ Zach Sanders, the no. 5 kid in the country.
The Hawks will suit up in black and gold singlets again March 5-6 at Northwestern for the Big Ten Championships. We predict total domination; nothing less. Dan Gable will be proud.

Even though the university is 2nd to Oklahoma State (formerly Oklahoma A&M) on the all-time national championship title list, all 23 of Iowa’s championship wins have come since 1975 to today. Last year was just another conference and national title season for Tom Brands and his boys. Gable’s Hawkeyes won consecutive titles from 1978 to 1986. They continued their reign in 1991 with back-to-back-to-back national titles and then again from 1995-2000. Gable retired in 1997, succeeded by Jim Zalesky, who didn’t miss a beat. He brought Iowa straight national championships from Gable’s retirement until his departure following the ’05-’06 season. Enter former Hawkeye wrestler Tom Brands, who revived the program with championship wins in 2008, 2009 and 2010. With no end in sight, is Iowa on pace for the second coming of the Dan Gable era? We sure think so.
