It’s Fayette vs. Jefferson, the “Unforgettables” vs. the “Doctors of Dunk,” Pitino vs. Calipari, Siva vs. Davis.

Yet, you don’t need to say it out loud to relay the implication of this Final Four outcome. Especially if you’re from the area, a Louisville-Wildcat battle to get to the National Championship is directly tied to your heritage and enough to send the natives into a frenzy-like, Bluegrass State. Right now, we’re scared and excited for the entire state of Kentucky.

Since rising early to their no. 2 preseason ranking, we’ve been saying that Kentucky is the real deal. Freshmen or otherwise, this squad is scary good when firing on all cylinders. Almost impossible to guard, unstoppable in transitions, they drain treys, rebound, and while he’s been criticized for producing players with FT weak spots, Calipari’s team average is slightly (a few percentage points) higher than their Cardinal opponents.

But, does this mean Louisville doesn’t stand a chance? Our gut screams, “obviously,” while our brain screams, “not necessarily.”

Here’s why:

Kentucky is not a deep team. The bench is not a viable option for the ‘Cats. If Davis gets shut down, into foul trouble or just plain gassed, there are really only five others that Calipari can demand results from, Marquis Teague being one of them. Unfortunately, no.25 is also a freshman with no tournament experience. The others? Sophomores that exited early from their first NCAA Big Dance last year. Darius Miller, the lone senior stud, must continue to lead by example.

Everyone knows UK has mastered the art of transition. These boys are long, lean, and make you pay for sloppy mistakes. Louisville has got to find a way to slow UK down and avoid the fast break by using solid zone D. This MUST happen because once Kentucky gets going…well, they’re gone.

By Saturday at 6:09 ET, we can safely assume Pitino’s crew has studied enough tape to know who likes to do what and when. For example, Davis always moves left to post so, anytime unibrow starts to face up in this direction, weak side D had better be there to make the block. Committing these reactionary defenses to memory (to the beastly but predictive UK offense) should already be locked and loaded in the minds of every Louisville starter. Otherwise, the Cardinals are in for a long night at the Superdome.

Sunday was a career-high night for Hawkeye senior Matt Gatens, who was feeling it from everywhere on the court. Whether it was deep near the beak, at the top of the key or on the wing, no. 5 just couldn’t miss.

Going into Carver-Hawkeye, Tom Crean’s Hoosiers were on a three-game winning streak and may have let their swag cloud their fundamentals. The Indiana D allowed Iowa to create space, take shots and make those shots. Then, when Iowa took control early, the first adjustment that should’ve been made was figuring out how to shut down Gatens.

Instead of doing just that, they allowed Gatens to hit a ridiculously hot streak late in the second half, making four three-balls in a row…all within the span of about four minutes.

But the Iowa City native can’t take all the credit – after a sloppy loss at Penn State just three days earlier, Fran seemingly lit a fire under his super stud sophomore forward, Melsahn Basabe. On this night, Basabe played like a Hawkeye possessed, leading the “block party” with five monster Bs and 13 points. The Hawks’ strategy of pounding the glass and utilizing the press left Indiana unable to block or read the point with enough time to counter.

While there is almost no chance of the Hawks getting an invite to go dancing this time around, we’re guessing the 2013 tournament has black and gold written all over it.

Northwestern manages to knock off the Izzo crew. The Hoosiers, previously on a horseradish-hot roll, get spanked by the Buckeyes. Minnesota stomps on Penn State on the road and then – Lord have mercy – the Iowa Hawkeyes make Novak look like a red shirt frosh with their win over Go Blue at Carver-Hawkeye, 75-59 FINAL. Indiana has tallied less overall L’s than the Illini but both are separated by just 2 in-conference W/L, which leads us to only one conclusion…

The Big Ten is all jacked up.

But let us be clear. We don’t want anyone to mistake this type of anarchy for mere regular season upsets; there is something more Byzantine that’s afoot.

Here are some transfixing, topical truths about one of our most beloved conferences:

Iowa is in a THREE-way tie for 6th place with Indiana and Wiscy. Why is this significant? While Iowa has one of the deepest benches in the Big Ten, no one was talking about this tidbit early on because they weren’t even half of a blip on anyone’s preseason playmakers meter. Then, the Badgers, who were placed on the preseason AP Poll at the 15 spot, have since fallen off the top 25 completely, replaced by Virginia. I know, mind-blowing right.

So, totally out of conference but it’s my blog and I’ll write what I want to so: Shout out to all my Running Rebels, who are just above the Cavaliers at no.14 this week. Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeebels!

Okay, back to business. Weber’s boys and the Spartans are not sitting pretty, however still at the top of the conference. Hunting not far behind are the Wolverines and Ohio St. (keep in mind, it’s only by half a game). I know what you’re thinking right now…it’s to pick the Bucks as the Big Ten fave, right? I mean, why not? Bufford and Sullinger are both back as 3-pt. weapons while Deshaun Thomas is literally powering forward (ahaha) for his sophomore year. ”Well, all I know is my gut’s telling me maybe.”

For those that didn’t get the decade-old Futurama reference, know that there is no sure-bet conference champion coming out of the week 11 gates. Purdue could pass Michigan or Ohio St. within 2 games while Northwestern, Iowa, and Minny continue to make noise in the month of January. The only safe bet you can take to the bank right now: Nebraska will be invited to the NIT. Suck it cornhuskers.

Chiefly with the bankroll of its wildcards, the season by hook or crook managed to produce record-setting moments and OTs only the disciple Gods dream of. The culmination of these Tebow-invoked, Rule 16.1 – 16.22 capers and Easy Brees-y achievements are the reasons why we now have a twinkle in our NFL retina.

Let’s launch with the conspicuous first so we can get get it out of the way and get on with our lives…

Jesus’ homeboy. Golden child of Josh McDaniels and now John Fox, he’s pulled bigger miracles out of his O-line than what happens with the Elephas maximus shortly after daily mastication. Somehow, from the fiery pit of the AFC West, the Mile High Messiah finds Thomas on a post route in the Steelers net of confusion and boom – 80 yd. completion. What. However, just when believers thought it was safe, the realization that is New England immediately followed last week’s celebration at Invesco. While Tebow has transcended the steep learning curve, causing mass hysteria seen in coast to coast headlines, his critical go-to formation will not accompany him to Foxborough. Eric Decker, compulsory to receive and block, is out. Chris Kuper, vital to the rush, is out. And trust us when we say Belichick will put bodies all over Thomas and co. while ditching the zones, leaving Tebow exposed and outmanned. Chung will be back for the Pats, aligned with McCourty, both at safety. If these guys end Denver’s running game, that is only the beginning of the underdogs’ headache. Furthermore, Brady has too many offensive weapons, which is what will win this playoff contest.

Flipping the script to the NFC West, Drew Brees is now the record holder for consecutive passes in the postseason sans picks and I doubt his logged attempts will cease at 215. This classic offense v. defense matchup is a good case study in locating an opponent’s soft spot. All season long, the SF backs and D ends have strangled runs, shadowing receivers by a horse hair. For crying out loud, they tied the Pack at a league-high 38 takeaways. If you truly boil it down, the Niners have really only fallen when opponents not just planned, but executed opportunity plays that converted to points. If Alex Smith and his crew can stay fundamentally sound without blowing ANY coverage, they will win.

Did someone say Flacco? Sure, the guy doesn’t typically fly out INTs in playoff games but that’s because he doesn’t have cojones as big as Brees, Brady or Rodgers. I would still say B-more has a shot, though. Why? Well, because they’re playing Houston, silly rabbit.

Green Bay has given up way too much Astroturf to sincerely be given kudos in terms of D. Initially, there’s a little bit of last minute turnover magic that must be credited to the Pack making the playoffs. If New York wants to shred some cheese from the final eight, all they have to do is slow GB down (way down) and keep Rodgers sitting on that uncomfortable metal bench as long as possible.

With dual unbeaten streaks on the line, within perhaps the biggest rivalry in the history of D1 wrasslin’, we’re unsure how Iowa City hasn’t imploded yet.

Last night, the Hawkeyes shut down Indiana to tie the Cowboys at 84 straight, a record that began at Okie St. in 1959 with Myron Roderick. Seven seasons later, it finally came to a halt which was a direct result of (depending on who you ask) Tommy Chesbro’s presence in Stillwater or the legendary Dan Gable taking the reins from Gary Kurdelmeier in Iowa back in ’72.

Both schools have their own set of tools to impose dominance on the other – the Cowboys’ shining star in 2011 NCAA champion Jordan Oliver at 133 (no.1) and All-American Jamal Parks at 149 (no.4). Entering the arena, both are perfect. Iowa will counter Oliver with Tony “the tiger” Ramos and put the pressure on at 125 with All-American and ’10-’11 Big Ten Champion Matt McDonough.

Tonight’s victory encapsulates more than just a number printed in the collegiate record books. Perfection, pride and glory awaits those donned in Black and Gold tonight. So go and get it boys.

*UPDATE: Evans (no.14) beats Bailey (no.19), Hawks up 13-10. Three to go.

Perry – Lofthouse goes into 2OT. Lofthouses falls, Iowa and Ok. St. tied 13-13.

Tied 16-16, Iowa loses by ONE CRITERIA POINT. REALLY. REALLY. I’m going to bed early tonight.

His old critics are speaking a little louder again, hate mail in Denver has seen a +.07 since Sunday and the Obama-like fever for optimism and change at Mile High has quickly dissipated with two straight losses and the AFC West title on the line.

When it comes to the wild card race, its purely a numbers game. It doesn’t matter Tebow allowed his ex-backup to make a mockery of his beloved Bronco squad on Sunday. Forget that the 7-3 loss to the CHIEFS came immediately after a Christmas Eve massacre at Buffalo. What matters now is through the miracle that is our Lord and savior, Jesus Christ, little Timmy has been blessed with a playoff gift. It will be the first time since Big Ben took it to Jake the Snake, that Denver is hosting a playoff game against Pittsburgh.

But can he do it? The odds are certainly stacked against him, so much so that even Mike Freeman dedicated an entire blog to how little league legend and Broncos’ GM John Elway believes in Tebow mania.

In his CBS cyber diary, he quoted Elway speaking to the AP, saying, “Tim Tebow’s not going anywhere.” Reer.

Look. What’s materializing now is an event we truly weren’t hoping for but knew would eventually present itself. It’s not that he stumbled or the D sucked that day or the zebras got it completely wrong. Tebow’s fundamental errors came back to haunt him and the past two opposing teams found solutions to his au courant moves. It was bound to happen sooner than later because breaking down tape can and likely does happen on the car ride home on Romeo Crennel’s iPhone. No. 15 still has issues throwing, which for a starting QB/stud draftee, throwing accurately and with SOME level of disillusion is an obligation. Part of his job is to force LB/DE miscalculation. Not misfire but get rid of it before (way before) leaving the pocket. In essence, make up your damn mind and be sneaky about it dude.

ESPN.com is reporting ASU is all set to announce the new hire of June Jones as head football coach, stealing him away from the second program he’s worked magic on, Southern Method University.

Jones’ meeting with the Sun Devils surfaced a few days ago, not long after the school sent Dennis Erickson packing. Even though local papers swarmed on the story, the prospect of having the ex-Hawai’i coach in the Valley of the Sun seemed so far in left field, not many gave the story legs. So, now it seems Jones’ future in Tempe is inevitable, should Arizona State fans be overjoyed or worried?

A look at Jones’ past…

In 2007, Took UH to the Sugar Bowl. Produced a record-setting QB in Timmy Chang and Heisman candidate Colt Brennan, who spent some time in the NFL with the Redskins.

Took a head coaching position at perhaps the most troubled program in the country and difficult to repair. Spent 4 seasons at Southern Methodist, at which the outcome was positive. Finished 5 and 3 in conference this season and made it to a bowl game.

Has experience with the pros. Coached and took to the field with Atlanta. Became the interim head coach of the Chargers in the late 90s but only went 3-10. Time in the NFL = 11 years.

A look at his future…

Has ridiculous star recruiting power with vast reach over a good chunk of the country, even Texas. This will play an integral role in the type of team ASU wants to have. Will sign three-star recruits and above only.

Not afraid to chuck the old play book out the window. As a matter of fact, he could throw it into the paper shredder. He’s an outside-the-box thinker and doesn’t blink when tradition is staring him in the face. Takes risks, which so far, have paid off and very handsomely we’d like to add.

Favors the run and shoot offense, which stacks receivers on the field. Sounds easy enough but for success, this requires a highly intelligent QB who can read and react quickly, before the defense gets to cover. Does he have this in next year’s senior QB Brock Osweiler? The signs point to yes. The 6’8″ Montana native has proved he can make late plays outside the pocket and has brains – the kid graduated HS early and received a head start on the field in the spring of ’09.

Future of the Devils

Image courtesy of the Dallas Observer

The Sun Devils came out swinging, racking up the bodies quickly with a 6 and 2 regular season start. But not to our surprise, disintegrated as the schedule deepened, eventually losing 4 straight to close their pathetic Pac-12 journey.

The gaping holes in the O line need to be patched so Osweiler can do his thing. The backs, from line to running, have got to put in the time during the off season. And someone for the love of everything good and righteous in the world, please get a new kicker. Or teach the current guy how to do so.

UPDATE: Arizona State has reportedly rescinded their offer to hire June Jones as head coach. For now, even though he already said his goodbyes, Jones will remain with the Mustangs. Awkward…

*For Daily.

Fans were delighted last week to hear that the NBA lockout has come to an end. While the lockout drew itself out for a long time, the agreement to end it came quite suddenly. This means that its time to buy your tickets or update your Direct TV packages and get ready to watch some basketball as soon as Christmas day. However, before the games start being played, there needs to be at least a brief period for free agency and transactions between teams. Such transactions were not allowed during the lockout, but starting December 9th, there will likely be a frenzy of activity not unlike what we saw in the NFL this past summer. So, with this in mind, here is a brief look at a few of the top NBA free agents, and where they may end up.

Nene – The Denver Nuggets’ center is a free agent starting December 9th, and most seem to agree that he’s the best available talent. Nene has blossomed into one of the most efficient post scorers in the league, plays with extremely high energy, and is a formidable force on the defensive end of the court as well. The Nuggets will likely make a significant effort to retain Nene, as much of their roster left for China during the lockout and won’t be able to return soon.

Jason Richardson – Richardson has long been a solid shooting guard in the NBA, and though he is declining some due to age and deteriorating quickness, he remains a quality player who can shoot from behind the line and plays good defense. Many expect the Chicago Bulls to make an offer, as the Bulls are in need of a 2 guard who can defend and create his own shot. The Bulls have Keith Bogans, a solid defensive guard, and Kyle Korver, a dynamite shooter – but Richardson would give them each player’s specialty in one body, and could turn them into an even more serious title contender.

David West – One of the more underrated forwards in the NBA, West is still fully capable of impacting a game, and can occasionally explode on offense. ESPN cites the Indiana Pacers as a likely destination, and it does indeed seem to make sense. The Pacers lack a starting quality 4, and putting West in line with steadily improving center Roy Hibbert and small forward Danny Granger would give the Pacers an extremely talented front line full of offensive potential and defensively capable bodies. The Pacers would take a huge step forward with West at the 4.

We figured it fitting our comeback piece should be a rebirth of sorts and the second coming of the Mile High Messiah fits just fine.

Just hours after the Broncos’ victory over the Jets, Tim Tebow already has a new congregation of believers. At the start of the season, the buzz hummed with a dismal tune, to the likes of, “he can’t pass; he’s not winning since he can’t mow over college kids anymore; he sucks.”

There’s no surprise that Vegas expected New York’s Sanchez to pass for almost double, rush for far less and finish the game with a completion rate superior to his opponent. All in all, the Jets were favored by 6 yet low and behold, lost by 4.

Truthfully though, Tebow played like garbage. If that last drive didn’t happen, Denver would’ve had serious confidence issues in San Diego on the 27th. Despite the rocky 3 quarters (and most of the 4th), the Broncos are actually making some noise in the AFC West as of late. With Tebow at the helm and the D line looking good, Denver has found success, losing just 1 of the last 5. Our guess is John Fox is praying it stays that way.

In the days following the dragging NFL lockout, free agents and their agents have been working round the clock to sniff out new contracts with new teams. The heightened frenzy is reminiscent of the Wild, Wild West with the “free for all” like impact being widely speculated but obviously, still unknown.

Philadelphia president Joe Banner and GM Howie Roseman teamed up with Andy Reid to formulate an aggressive approach to capitalize on the league’s mass hysteria and made several swift (and smart) moves on behalf of the team. Somehow the Eagles managed to snag CB Nnamdi Asomugha away from the Jets and Dallas and made another deal that will eventually ship CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie into the City of Brotherly Love from the Valley of the Sun. They also brought in ex-Titan Vince Young to be Michael Vick’s no.2. Did we mention they also signed T Cullen Jenkins and DE Jason Babin? It’s gonna be a bloodbath at Lincoln Financial come fall.

By giving up Rodgers-Cromartie, the Cardinals will receive a second-round draft pick and a new QB in Kevin Kolb. Arizona teams make peculiar trades all the time so we’re not shocked. Nor do we care.

The Pats like to gamble on big names with equally large attitudes so it’s no wonder why Belichick said yes to WR Chad Ochocinco and DT Albert Haynesworth. He’ll have his hands full this season but he usually does anyway. As a side note, coach won’t be seeing Randy Moss in a New England uniform anymore now that he’s officially retired at the age of 34.

And on to Miami which still has WR Brandon Marshall. Earlier today, ABC News reported on a press conference held by Marshall, where he told reporters that he suffers from a borderline personality disorder. He hinted the mental disease may have played a role in the domestic incident that occurred in the spring; Marshall also noted the alleged dispute with his wife was one of the main reasons he chose to publicly address his mental status. Maybe he can unleash some of his crazy on the field against his opponents and catch some balls this fall? We shall see.

After finishing the fourth round Sunday, Rory McIlroy tweeted a few words of encouragement to his childhood hero, Darren Clarke. The 42-year-old was shooting the best golf of his life at Royal St. George on this day, closing in on the Open Championship.

At one point, American Dustin Johnson was hot on his heels, just two strokes behind Clarke. And before DJ, Lefty was in second but fell to pieces as he moved along the back nine – a storyline we’ve seen one too many times.

But neither experience or dashingly good looks could take away what the Ulsterman had been crafting since he turned pro back in 1990. It was his day and his Open, finishing -5.

On the 18th green, Clarke was presented with something he battled near tropical depression-like weather for in Sandwich – his major title.

Don’t let your golf game determine your attitude; let your attitude determine your golf game.”

-Darren Clarke

Nagging “minor” injuries have caused Tiger Woods to miss two majors, the latest being the British Open.

Woods suffered these haunting yet “minor” injuries to his knee and Achilles during the Masters in May.

Then, after not playing in the Wells Fargo Championship he decided to sack up and enter The Players Championship (just a week later) but only got in nine holes.

The former top pro golfer in the wold is now at the 17 spot and no.116 on the PGA Tour. As a reminder, only the first 125 get a shot at the playoffs so if he’s not healed and in Atlanta on Aug. 8, he will not qualify for any of the PGA Tour til’ later this fall.

Despite a broken wrist, sophomore Christian Walker suited up for his team Monday night against Florida, not only to serve as an inspiration but South Carolina’s late game savior as well.

The game itself was a blunt display of shoddy offense combined with small, vapid movements. At times, it was downright boring. Unlike the Ray Lewis tackles seen earlier this decade, defense isn’t always exciting.

Florida’s boys drew first blood, chomping down in the 3rd inning and at the time, Kevin O’Sullivan had no idea this would be the last scoring play for his Gators in the 2011 College World Series.

The scoreboard didn’t see action again until the Gamecocks tied it up in the eighth, with two more fruitless innings.

Then, as the yawns got louder, Walker approaches home plate. He singles to first base and steals second. Gator catcher Mike Zunino attempted to reach Walker by flying the ball out to center field but its was too late. Walker was rounding third and by then, heading home as Bryson Smith reached the madness.

Many expected South Carolina’s elimination to come last Friday yet here they are, taking Game 1 against their SEC rival team to advance to Tuesday’s Game 2 Final.

To the Gamecocks, a repeat win is within their reach and we think it will be just as special, even if it is the second time around.

One fleeting glance of Rory McIlroy’s father prompted the biggest grin ever from his son following four historic rounds of the 111th U.S. Open Sunday.

It was the redemption McIlroy was shooting for after the 22-year-old’s equally historic choke at the Masters earlier this Spring.

In an unheard of run that included 35 holes with no bogey and 17 holes with no missed greens, this becomes the Northern Irishman’s first major title, the first of what we expect to be many more.

Throughout the famed contest at Congressional, McIlroy demolished his competition by holding an astonishing -17 on the leader board.

Speaking on the 18th green at his own trophy presentation, he spoke of his earlier loss at Augusta.

“I knew what I needed to do today to win,” McIlroy said.

“I couldn’t be happier,” he added.

He is currently ranked the no. 4 golf player in the World.

Back then, Vancouver again lost in a Game 7 but to the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Unfortunately, reports indicate this year’s mass hysteria was amplified, possibly due to the stinging loss at home.

The businesses of hardworking, honest citizens were destroyed. Cars lit on fire. Four people were stabbed and left laying on the road like stray animals. Hundreds treated for tear gas that local authorities were forced to use to quell the violence.

In a city of such beauty, who knew there could be so much trash…and we’re not talking about the litter on the street.

While the few inept certainly do not represent the many gracious in Canada, the anarchy is embarrassing to the city and repugnant to the rest of the World.

And to the proud fans of the Canuck organization – a true sign of a champion, whether it be an individual, team or city, is to win with class and lose with even more.

In a few hours, one team will leave Chase Field as leader of the NL West – the Arizona Diamondbacks or 2010 World Series Champions, the San Francisco Giants.

Last year’s champs reigning in on the division lead isn’t so shocking but a team previously in the gutter in terms of rankings in mid-May sure is. I mean, talk about going from worst to almost first! And yes, we just used an exclamation point.

Tonight, the Giants will activate Pablo Sandoval who’s been on the DL since April 29 for surgery on his right hand. Freddy Sanchez and Buster Posey are both still out.

The home team will reportedly place Josh Collmenter on the mound, most likely because the rook helped lift his team to their only W out of six games vs. San Francisco this season.

-For Gingee.
